Why Regular Grooming Is Important for Your Dog's Health

By Sarah · SJ’s Rebarkable Dog Grooming, Old Catton

Many people think dog grooming is mainly about appearance, but regular grooming plays an important role in your dog's overall health and wellbeing.

Brushing removes loose hair, dirt and debris while helping distribute natural oils throughout the coat. This helps keep the coat in good condition.

Regular grooming appointments also provide opportunities to spot potential issues early, including:

  • Skin irritation
  • Lumps and bumps
  • Changes around the ears
  • Overgrown nails
  • Changes in coat condition

Long nails can affect the way a dog walks and may eventually lead to discomfort. Matted coats can trap moisture against the skin, which can contribute to irritation.

Professional grooming is also beneficial for maintaining hygiene around sensitive areas and helping dogs stay comfortable throughout the year.

For many dogs, grooming becomes part of their regular healthcare routine alongside vaccinations, exercise and a balanced diet.

Grooming is not a substitute for veterinary care. If I notice a change that concerns me, I will let you know so you can seek advice from your vet.
